What is psoriasis?

Psoriasis is a chronic inflammatory disorder, affecting 2% of the population worldwide. In the majority of patients, it appears before the age of 40. The immune system, genetic and environmental factors play a major role in the pathogenesis. The characteristic skin lesions - red, thick, scaly and itchy plaques - present most often on the scalp, knees and elbows but can develop anywhere on the body. Nails and joints can also be affected. Psoriasis is a lifelong condition with remissions and relapses, impacting the patients’ quality of life.

How to treat psoriasis

There is currently no cure for the disease. Topical preparations, phototherapy and systemic treatment can produce a symptom-free status. Psoriasis is the most actively researched field in dermatology, resulting in a greater understanding of the condition and the potential to improve patients' quality of life.
