Aging Experts Join Nestlé Skin Health at IAGG 2017 to Shine a Spotlight on Skin Health as Critical Pathway to Healthy Aging
SAN FRANCISCO, July 25, 2017 – Two of the world’s preeminent experts on aging joined Nestlé Skin Health yesterday at the International Association of Gerontology and Geriatrics World Congress (IAGG) to highlight the critical role of skin wellness in successful aging. In a conversation led by Michael Hodin, CEO of the Global Coalition on Aging, Baroness Sally Greengross and Dr. Du Peng also explored the potential of new and accessible solutions in skin health to contribute to greater independence, functional ability and wellness as we grow older.
The Nestlé Skin Health symposium coincided with the release of the groundbreaking Consensus Statement on a Life Course of Healthy Skin, co-signed by the International League of Dermatological Societies (ILDS), IAGG and the Global Coalition on Aging, leading global organizations in dermatology and aging. In alignment with the World Health Organization Health and Ageing Strategy, the new Consensus Statement draws attention to skin health’s key role in maintaining functional ability as we age.
“Meeting our physical and emotional health needs becomes particularly challenging as we grow older – and particularly important,” explained Dr. Du, Director for the Institute of Gerontology, Renmin University, China. “As we age, our ability to meet these needs can mean the difference between continuing to live active, healthy, independent lives and the need for increasingly costly care.”
“In this era when more and more of us can expect to reach 100 years, each of us hopes to retain the functional ability we need to enjoy this newfound longevity,” said Baroness Greengross, a member of the UK House of Lords and President of the International Longevity Center - UK. “Maintaining skin wellness is increasingly recognized as a critical and accessible lever to allow us to manage our own successful aging.”
During the symposium, Nestlé Skin Health shared its most recent research and cutting-edge solutions in skin health. Scientists shared both high tech and low tech innovations that empower individuals to better manage their own wellness, such as Nestlé Skin Health’s ground-breaking Itch Tracker app for Apple Watch. The Itch Tracker is the first tool to objectively evaluate scratching during sleep, a problem that is particularly acute in people living with Alzheimer’s and other dementias. Better understanding of itch in dementia can lead to more effective care and decreased suffering for the millions worldwide living with cognitive impairment.
“We have been able to tap into enormous expertise in the science of skin health and aging” explained Peter Nicholson, Nestlé Skin Health Vice President of Business Development and Strategy and one of the speakers at the symposium. “On the occasion of the release of the new ILDS consensus statement on skin health, it was an honor to be able to share with the IAGG community of scientists and thought leaders how Nestlé Skin Health is leveraging our expertise in partnership with organizations, scientists, clinicians, and consumers alike to help us live not just longer lives, but more active, healthy, and fulfilled lives.”
