As with our parent company Nestlé, we believe that to be successful as a business, we need to create shared value for society as well as for our shareholders. As a responsible business, we want to help shape sustainable consumption and steward resources for future generations. Our ambition is to strive for no impact from our operations by 2030. To achieve our ambition, we focus our work on the three main areas below: caring for water, acting on climate change, and safeguarding the environment.
Caring for water
We currently run programmes to reduce water withdrawal, recycle and reuse water, use alternative sources such as rainwater, and have water-saving projects in each of our factories. From 2005 to 2015, these efforts enabled us to reduce water withdrawal by 61%. We measure our withdrawal by tonne of product, and our aim for 2020 is to have reduced direct water withdrawal in our manufacturing facilities by 20% per tonne of product, against a 2010 baseline.
Acting on climate change
Our objective is to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from our manufacturing facilities by 35% per tonne of product, by 2020, from a 2010 baseline. Between 2005 to 2015, we were able to reduce direct GHG emissions by 43% per tonne of product, due to a range of projects aimed at using renewable energy, which now accounts for 41% of the electricity we use. Currently, three of our seven factory sites use renewable electricity. The energy we use at the three is from a combination of solar, wind and hydropower energy, geothermal, biofuel and biomass. We are also changing the energy our Canadian factory boilers run on, from gas to renewable electricity. We work with our suppliers to reduce our GHG impact across our distribution network.
Safeguarding the environment
By 2020, we aim to generate no waste for disposal at all our sites, and are working to achieve this through a series of initiatives. By the end of 2016, we had achieved this at five of our seven factories. Also by 2020, we will be using life-cycle analysis (LCA), to assess and optimize the environmental impact of our products. This analysis technique will help us prioritize our initiatives in eco-design, manufacturing and transportation. We also evaluate and select our suppliers and outsourced producers based on their environmental performance, and by 2020 we will audit 80% of them on the Nestlé Supplier Code.
