At Galderma, we believe that to be successful as a business, we need to create shared value for our shareholders, our employees and for society as a whole. As a responsible business, we want to help shape sustainable consumption and steward resources for future generations. Our ambition is to strive for no impact from our operations by 2050. To achieve this, we are focusing our work on three main areas: caring for water, acting on climate change and safeguarding the environment.
Caring for water
We currently run programs to reduce consumption, recycle and reuse water in our factories and research facilities. Between 2005 and 2015, these efforts enabled us to reduce consumption in our factories by 43%. By 2020, we aim to reduce direct water consumption in our manufacturing facilities by 25% per ton of product, based on our 2010 consumption levels.
Acting on climate change
Our objective is to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from our manufacturing facilities by 35% per ton of product by 2020 (based on 2010 emissions). Between 2005 and 2015, we were able to reduce direct emissions by 62% per ton of product, thanks to a range of projects using renewable energy, which now accounts for 95% of the electricity we use.
Four of our five factory sites use 100% renewable electricity and one 80%. This consists in a combination of solar, wind and hydropower energy, geothermal, biofuel and biomass. We are also converting our Canadian factory gas-fired boilers to run on renewable electricity.
We are working with our suppliers to reduce our GHG impact across our distribution network. Our future continuous improvement efforts will be focused on GHG Scope3, meaning integrating upstream and downstream goods transportation, purchase of goods and services and eco-design/recyclability of our finished products.
Safeguarding the environment
At the beginning of 2019, all our factories achieved ZERO waste to landfill. By 2020, we will be using the results of our life-cycle analysis (LCA), to identify projects to optimize the environmental impact of our products. This analysis will help us prioritize our initiatives in eco-design, manufacturing and transportation. We also evaluate and select our suppliers and outsourced producers based on their environmental performance, and by 2020 we will have audited 80% of them on the Galderma Supplier Code.
