Our long-term commitment to environmental sustainability
In line with our ambition to become the world’s leading dermatology company, we at Galderma believe that in order to be successful, we need to create shared value with the patients and consumers we serve, as well as with our shareholders, employees and society as a whole.
As a responsible company, we want to help shape sustainable consumption and preserve scarce resources for future generations. Our unwavering commitment to sustainable development is reflected in our environmental sustainability agenda, which is articulated around clearly-defined areas of focus where we can make a positive impact now and in the future.
Our guiding principles
We have established the four following guiding principles taking into account the United Nations’ 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development:
Inspire employees at all levels to engage proactively in environmental initiatives in the workplace and beyond, including awareness, education and good practice sharing.
Foster ongoing, transparent communication with our key internal and external stakeholders. Integrate environmental sustainability into our product and brand communications wherever possible.
Implement assessment of environmental impacts in the formulation, packaging design and distribution of new and reformulated products to fuel the decision-making process and identify opportunities to minimize our impact.
Track and reduce our direct and indirect greenhouse gas emissions, water use and waste, thereby contributing to fight climate change.
Engage suppliers and partners to advance sustainability efforts in a coordinated manner, effectively implementing the Responsible Sourcing program.
Our areas of focus
Our overall ambition is to have no or minimal detrimental environmental impact from our activities across the globe. To achieve this, we engage with internal and external stakeholders to foster good practices along the value chain. More specifically, we have been focusing our efforts on three main areas where we have delivered concrete results: caring for water, acting on climate change, and safeguarding the environment.
1. Caring for water
Water is our most precious resource and we continue to invest in measures to preserve water supplies everywhere we operate.
We currently run programs to reduce consumption, recycle and reuse water in our factories and research facilities. Between 2010 and 2019, these efforts enabled us to reduce water consumption in our factories by 26% per ton of product, ahead of our initial 2020 plan.
2. Acting on climate change
Between 2010 and 2019, we reduced direct greenhouse gas emissions by 52% per ton of product, ahead of our initial 2020 plan, thanks to a range of projects using renewable energy, which now accounts for 95% of the electricity we use.
Three of our four factory sites use 100% renewable electricity. This includes a combination of solar, wind and hydropower energy, geothermal, biofuel and biomass.
We are working with our suppliers to reduce greenhouse gas impacts in our distribution network. Our future improvement efforts will be focused on greenhouse gas emission Scope 3, meaning integrating upstream and downstream goods transportation, purchase of goods and services, and recyclability of our finished products.
3. Safeguarding the environment
At the beginning of 2019, all of our four factories achieved zero waste to landfill, ahead of our initial 2020 plan. By 2020, we will be using the results of our life-cycle analysis to identify projects to optimize the environmental impact of our products. This analysis will help us prioritize our initiatives in eco-design, manufacturing and transportation while we will continue to evaluate and select our suppliers and outsourced producers based on their environmental performance.
We won't stop here
Drawing on a science-based approach, we are constantly exploring and evaluating opportunities to further minimize the environmental footprint of our operations and our products to help shape a sustainable future for generations to come.
