In society

Sustainable development

We believe that in order to be successful as a business, we need to create shared value with our shareholders, our employees and with society as a whole.

As a responsible business, we want to help shape sustainable consumption and preserve scarce resources for future generations. We are environmentally conscious and want to be active contributors to the communities we interact with, society at large and our shareholders. We invest in the development of our people, technologies, products and health solutions.

Our ambition is to strive for no or minimal detrimental environmental impact from our operations by 2050. To achieve this, we are focusing our work on three main areas: caring for water, acting on climate change, and safeguarding the environment.

Caring for water

We currently run programs to reduce consumption, recycle and reuse water in our factories and research facilities. Between 2010 and 2019, these efforts enabled us to reduce water consumption in our factories by 26% per ton of product, ahead of our initial 2020 plan.

Acting on climate change

Between 2010 and 2019, we were able to reduce direct greenhouse gas emissions by 52% per ton of product, ahead of our initial 2020 plan, thanks to a range of projects using renewable energy, which now accounts for 95% of the electricity we use.

Three of our factory sites use 100% renewable electricity. This encompasses a combination of solar, wind and hydropower energy, geothermal, biofuel and biomass. We are also converting our Canadian factory gas-fired boilers to run on renewable electricity.

We are working with our suppliers to reduce our greenhouse gas impact in our distribution network. Our future continuous improvement efforts will be focused on greenhouse gas emission Scope 3, meaning integrating upstream and downstream goods transportation, purchase of goods and services and eco-design/recyclability of our finished products.

Safeguarding the environment

At the beginning of 2019, all of our factories achieved zero waste to landfill. By 2020, we will be using the results of our life-cycle analysis to identify projects to optimize the environmental impact of our products. This analysis will help us prioritize our initiatives in eco-design, manufacturing and transportation. We also consistently evaluate and select our suppliers and outsourced producers based on their environmental performance, and by 2020, we will have audited 80% of them against the Galderma Supplier Code.
